“I’m so glad you had some time to take a look at him.” Luna hovered at Hagrid’s side, unable to see over his shoulder, even when he was sitting down. On the table before them was a writhing purple animal. It was like a snake, only with a forked tail to match its forked tongue, six legs like chickens’, and incredibly soft fur covering its body. Its bite was so poisonous, the wizard who had discovered it had died and the witch who had passed it off to her was lying injured in a wizarding hospital in Beirut.
They were lucky Luna had been passing by on her travels. If Luna hadn’t taken charge of it, they would have destroyed it without finding out anything about it. It was ill, clearly, but it didn’t deserve to die just because it was scared. It seemed to like Luna, perhaps because she didn’t poke at it with her wand. She wore dragonhide gloves when handling it, but she let it snuggle in her arms, against her chest, as they travelled.
If anyone could figure out what was wrong with a dangerous magical creature and survive the encounter, it was Luna’s old Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts.
“Poor little guy. Yeh said he was found burrowing in the jungle ground?”
Luna nodded. “That’s what I was told. It came charging out of a hole at him, bit him, and he barely made it back to basecamp alive.”
Hagrid studied it for a moment. Then he jumped to his feet. Luna jumped back, startled, but he bumped into her all the same. Their bodies pressed close together. “Ooops. Sorry there. Kinda used to bein’ on my own ‘round here.” He put his arm around her and pulled her to the side. Then he squeezed past and left his house.
He was back minutes later with a huge tub full of dirt. He set it on the table, scooped up the creature, and plopped it inside. At once it scratched at the dirt and then dove under the surface. It was gone for a few moments. Then he resurfaced somewhere else in the tub. It shook off the excess dirt like a dog shakes off water. It looked at each of them for a moment. Then, cooing, it dove back under the surface.
Luna laughed and leaned into Hagrid as he put his arm around her again. “Just like a pejoridon, only in dirt!”
Hagrid blinked down at her. “A whatsit now?”
“Pejoridon. A little water sprite that dives just like that.”
“But in water.”
“Yes, in water. They’re quite beautiful.”
There was silence for a few moments, apart from a few sounds of scratching and scraping at dirt. Then, softly, Hagrid said. “Yer quite beautiful.”
As she turned and looked up at him, with a smile, the creature popped its head out of the tub and began cooing again.
